The mobility of aluminium in sediments was evaluated through a one-step extraction with a strong chelating agent. Single and sequential extraction procedures for the extraction of Al were applied to four sediments from a polluted region. A single-step extraction with 0.05 mol L~(-1) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used, and compared with a standardized SEP as reference. The Al contents extracted into Na2EDTA were in good agreement with the sequential extraction that yeilds mobile and potentially mobile portion of Al. Extracted EDTA contents make up more than 70% of the first-three-step sum of the five-step extraction procedure. Thus, Na2EDTA extraction of Al could be applied to assess aluminium mobility changes in sediments and soils.

The present work aims to be a methodical tool and frame information for an engineering analyst in pursuing the validation of similar analytical methods. A method was developed for determination of major elements in solid environmental matrices (soils, ores, river and lake sediments). The determination has been carried out using fused lithium tetraborate pearls. The obtained validation characteristics correspond with those required for analytical validation of the method. The present method shows repeatability within 5 % and accuracy 85??????115 % in the whole determination range. Detection limits for metal oxides ranged from 0.02 to 0.20 %. The RSDs in a long-term stability study did not exceed 2 %. The validation results and other tests confirm suitability of the ED XRF spectrometry for analysis of major elements in solids of environmental and geological origin and compatibility with the methods used in reference laboratories. The method is practical in terms of sample preparation, costs and time saving.
